The liminal space: embracing the space in-between

The liminal space is just before the new season begins… an in-between threshold where you have left an old state but not yet fully arrived at a new one.

Natural examples of this occur as we shift from winter to spring, or summer to autumn. Acting as bridges from dark to light, or hot to cold, these times are often felt deep within our psyches and they can definitely be times when we feel a sense of transformation in our inner and outer lives.

Yes, these are also often times of uncertainty, discomfort or unease, a sense of being unsure what’s coming next and when - looking back and wanting to move forward, but not quite being able to yet.

We love to get ready for the next thing coming, without acknowledging these liminal times that perhaps have more to teach us than we realise. Nature does not rush these times, in fact nature often teases us, like getting your big coat out for autumn/winter, and suddenly there’s a random warm day, as if nature is saying, ‘slow down, it’s not over yet!’

And that’s exactly what I think these liminal times are for… slowing down… taking a moment to look back over the previous season and acknowledge all that occurred for you - a short pause before you prepare. Use this as a time to close off one season, and gradually plan for the next. Allow yourself time for rest and create room for growth.

Let’s not just acknowledge the equinoxes and the solstices, but the spaces in-between, and just before… let’s get a bit more comfortable in this in-between state, honour it with a little more grace, and allow ourselves to be unsure exactly how or when it will all unfold, but trust that it will.
